Alice: thirties, African-American, very “New York”
From Epiphany Cake:
Alice is a novelist sent by her agent to a reading group in suburban Los Angeles, She discovers that no one in the all-white, all-female book group has even read her novel about a slave girl named Daphne making her way to America. After Alice confronts the group for lying, she is forced to reveal that she herself had to lie in order to write a bestseller.
